About Our Halau
Halau Hula 'O Namakahulali has been in existence since 1993. The halau has entertained at many social functions around town, such as for Governor Linda Linge at Washington Place, at Governor Cayetano's inauguration celebration, the Miss Universe Pageant, Aloha Bowl halftime, the Makaha Bash and the Aloha Tower Marketplace Grand Opening. The Halau performed in the Prince Lot Hula Festival in 2007, and continually since 2010.
Kumu Shirley and husband Joe Recca performed in the Ku'u Ha'eha'e 2008 at the Hawaii Theatre. They have also performed in the Kauikeouli (Kamehameha III) Birthday Celebration in Kona, Hawaii in 2009 and 2011.
Delys Recca, Shirley and Joe's daughter, recently held the role of Poli`ahu in the Tau Dance Company's 2011 production of "Poli`ahu" at the Hawai`i Theater.
The halau performs regularly at the Hula Mound at Kuhio Beach for the City and County of Honolulu's Sunset Hula and Torch Lighting show; an honor that the halau has held since the beginning of the City and County program. The Salvation Army's Thanksgiving Luncheon is another special event that the halau had been pleased to be a part of for 25 years.
We are a very fun loving and social halau. We get together to dance as part of halau fund raising activities, but also for fun and comraderie. Visit our photo gallery for recent performances and socials!
